Wales Driving Day
Friday 21st August
Classic Travelling invites you to spend a memorable day exploring the dramatic landscapes and timeless charm of Wales. From the rolling countryside around Ludlow to the rugged mountains and coastlines of Snowdonia, this driving day combines sweeping scenery, historic towns, and some of the very best driving roads in the country. We will gather from 9:30am in the historic market town of Ludlow, often described as one of the most beautiful towns in England. Over fresh coffee and pastries, there will be time to meet fellow drivers before we set off at around 10:30. Then will begin a two-hour drive heading west into Wales. Our route leads across the border and through the soft hills of Powys before climbing into wilder terrain. We follow quiet country lanes towards Lake Vyrnwy, where stone bridges, wooded slopes, and glimpses of the great reservoir make for an enchanting approach.
Around 1pm we will pause for lunch at a hotel by the lake, with its sweeping views and hearty yet refined dishes, it provides a warm welcome and chance to enjoy the surroundings. The afternoon drive is truly spectacular. We head north into Snowdonia National Park, following the winding lanes famed for their hairpins and breathtaking panoramas. From there, the route sweeps through Dolgellau before climbing into the mountains once again. Our day concludes in the iconic village of Portmeirion for afternoon tea, this is the extraordinary Italianate creation of Sir Clough Williams-Ellis. Nestled on its own private peninsula, Portmeirion is a fittingly unique and memorable place to end the day.
